The Honorable David Patterson
New York State Governor
New York State
Albany NY 12247
Dear Governor Patterson
This letter is sent to advise you of our concerns relative to Assembly bill No. 8501 and Senate bill No. 5661. I am a registered voter and/or taxpayer in New York State and I support my local volunteer fire department. I am concerned that this legislation will place my local fire department in jeopardy of consolidation or dissolution.
My volunteer fire department provides me with fire protection and other emergency services. Residents from my community volunteer their time to provide these services to me and that makes these services efficient, effective and economical.
I do not want my local fire station closed and I do not want my volunteer fire department disbanded. I fear this legislation may lead to that.
As a taxpayer we cannot afford another paid service.
I urge you to veto this legislation because it does not provide adequate protection for the volunteer fire service.
I find it shocking that no studies have been done relative to a cost benefit analysis on this vital service and our elected Representatives would still consider a bill that would put consolidations or dissolutions to a vote of the registered voters of our community to eliminate local governments without providing the voters with the information they need to make informed decisions before they vote on such an important measure. Clearly, more work needs to be done on this legislation because our communities need information before they vote on such important issues.
More importantly, we need to take steps to take steps to support and nurture the volunteer fire service because in this economy we simply cannot afford to lose the financial benefit received from volunteer emergency services.
Very truly yours,
